NADYA TICHMAN AND MARC SHAPIRO Th Jan 10
Ms. Tichman is Associate Concertmaster and Mr. Shapiro is pianist for the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. The program will include the Beethoven Violin Sonata Op. 30, #3; the Prokofiev Unaccompanied Violin Sonata, Stravinsky’s Pastoral, and Saint-Saens’ Sonata #1.
PIANIST GUSTAVO ROMERO , ALL-BEETHOVEN PROGRAM Th Feb 14
Born and nurtured in San Diego with heritage in Guadalajara, Mexico, this prizewinning virtuoso pianist is a graduate of Juilliard. He will present Oakmont’s first all-Beethoven program including the great Waldstein Sonata.
LA CATRINA STRING QUARTET Th Mar 13
Founded in 2001 and currently based at Kent State University in Ohio, this will be the first Latino quartet ever to grace our stage .They will perform a program of Haydn, Turina, Dvorak, and Mexican compositions.
HAI-YE NI and AVI DOWNES Th Apr 3
One of the most accomplished young cellists of our time, winner of the first prize at the Naumburg International Cello Competition, she is currently principal cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Collaborating with Avi Downes, she will play works by Beethoven, Britten, Bartok, and Cesar Franck.
RAFAL BLECHACZ, CONCERT PIANIST Th May 8
Gold medalist of the 15th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Rafal was born in Poland in 1985, and has been winning prestigious prizes from the age of five. He has since performed with the Warsaw Philharmonic, Mariinsky Orchestra under Gergiev, and the Tonhalle in Zurich. Three new CDs will be released by Deutsche Grammophon. His program includes Mozart, Debussy, Szymanowski, and all 24 of Chopin’s Op. 28 Preludes .
EOS ENSEMBLE Th June 19
Under the leadership of violinist Craig Reiss, this group of outstanding musicians from the San Francisco Opera Orchestra plans to present Respighi’s 15 minute gorgeous piece Il Tramonto (Sunset), for soprano and string quartet, along with a string quartet TBA.
TILDEN PIANO TRIO Th Jul 10
All Juilliard alumni, violinist Sarn Oliver and cellist Peter Wyrick are both members of the San Francisco Symphony, and pianist June Choi Oh is a faculty member at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.Their program will include music by Beethoven, Oliver, Ravel, and Arensky.
JOEL FAN, CONCERT PIANIST Th Aug 14
This New York based pianist and Yo-yo Ma accompanist was a great success two years ago at Oakmont. He is returning to do a program entitled “From the Americas” which will include music by William Bolcom, Gottschalk, Ginastera, and Jelly Roll Morton.
AXEL STRAUSS AND FRIENDS Th Sep 11
In 1998, violinist Axel Strauss became the first German artist ever to win the Naumburg Violin Competition. The program will consist of Schubert’s great String Quintet in C and the Arensky Quartet No. 2.
LINCOLN PIANO TRIO Th Oct 16
Composed of violinist Desiree Ruhstrat, cellist David Cunliffe, and pianist Marta Aznavoorian, this outstanding young trio is returning by popular demand to perform a program of Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Rebecca Clarke.
LAUREL ENSEMBLE (Laura and Howard Stanley Memorial Concert) Th Nov 13
The core musicians in this group are violinist Christina Mok, violist Jenny Douglass, cellist Krisanthy Desby, flutist Sarah Holzman, and clarinetist Ann Lavin.Their mission is to play varied repertoire from duos to octets. For Oakmont they will perform music by Kodaly, Villa-Lobos, and Mozart.
CALIFORNIA PIANO QUARTET Th Dec 11
“Terrific....splendid....poised, polished, and passionate.”--San Francisco Classical Voice. Composed of Kay Stern, Benjamin Simon, Dana Putnam Fonteneau, and Robert Schwartz,--all musicians of great stature-- they will give us quartets by Brahms and Mozart.
All concerts are subject to change. They take place in Berger Center starting at 1:30pm and usually end by 3:45pm. The fee for an individual concert is $10 per person payable at the door. Season tickets can be purchased for $84 and are good for all 12 concerts. These are available from the Treaurer at the concerts of Nov, Dec, Jan, and Feb only and checks should be made out to “Oakmont Concert Series”. All concerts are open solely to residents, performers, and their friends and guests.
